The machine typesetting era began in 1886 and ended in 1976, and it is barely in practice (90 years). The phototypesetting era began in 1950 and ended around 1990, and it is totally gone (40 years). The laser imagesetting era began in 1978 and ended in 2008, replaced by direct-to-plate, on- and off-press (30 years).
In modern times, typesetting involves using various software packages, such as desktop publishing applications, to arrange a pages images and text. Due to the use of digital tools to lay out books, typesetters may also complete the other graphic design elements of a book, such as designing and adding vector graphics.
To become a typesetter, get a job working with a publisher, graphic designer, or art director. Enhance your art and graphic design skills with hands-on practice in preparing fonts, importing text, and revising layouts ing to client specifications.
Definitions of typesetter. noun. one who sets written material into type. synonyms: compositor, setter, typographer. type of: pressman, printer.
Typesetting can be defined as the process of preparing and arranging text and images for printing. This process determines how the content on pages will appear in a variety of publications, including books, newspapers, and magazines.
When printed materials were first released, typesetters were responsible for cutting blocks of type out of wood or metal and arranging them onto plates to create printed broadsheets or books. Very few artisan booksellers today still work in this manner; most modern typesetters create type using digital technology.
Advances such as the typewriter and computer would push the state of the art even farther ahead. Still, hand composition and letterpress printing have not fallen completely out of use, and since the introduction of digital typesetting, it has seen a revival as an artisanal pursuit.
