Enhances readability: Typesetting involves careful selection of font, font size, line spacing, margins, and other formatting elements to improve the readability of the text. Proper typesetting makes it easier for readers to engage with the content, reducing the risk of errors, misinterpretations, or confusion.
When printed materials were first released, typesetters were responsible for cutting blocks of type out of wood or metal and arranging them onto plates to create printed broadsheets or books. Very few artisan booksellers today still work in this manner; most modern typesetters create type using digital technology.
In modern times, typesetting involves using various software packages, such as desktop publishing applications, to arrange a pages images and text. Due to the use of digital tools to lay out books, typesetters may also complete the other graphic design elements of a book, such as designing and adding vector graphics.
They format, style and arrange text and illustrations for publications. Their goal is to make the work clear and legible, without any distracting elements like having the same word repeated along a column. Traditionally, typesetters produced and formatted letters using wooden blocks.
The word typesetting comes from the original process of physical printing. Originally, moveable letters, numbers, and symbols (type) were put in place (set) by hand, making pages ready for print. Nowadays, typesetters use digital layout software, such as InDesign and LateX to arrange text.
Typesetting is generally more associated with the formal process of standardizing text so that it is readable and legible. For example, a book publisher would use typesetting to make sure that the text on each page conforms to standards regarding spacing, font size, and type of font so that the text is easy to read.
A typesetter is responsible for choosing margin size, fonts, chapter styles, how large section breaks are, where illustrations go, what size subheadings are, and so on. Essentially, they decide what page layout will be best for the reader. Typesetting seems simple. Its just making words look neat on a page.
