DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table.
There are two distinct types of DITA documents, topics and maps. In addition to the DITA topic and map types, Arbortext also supports the DITA Ditabase document type. DITA Ditabase documents are used to collect different types of DITA topics into a single document.
How does DITA work? DITA organizes your content into individual building blocks, separated by topic tags. Each block of information receives a tag, which allows a machine to recognize and thus reorganize the blocks into whatever configuration the writer desires. This is called authoring.
Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
A topic in DITA is the most granular entity of information. ing to the DITA specifications, a topic should be short enough to be easily readable, but long enough to make sense on its own. To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types.
