Using rest, ice, compression, and elevation, also known as the RICE regimen, as soon as possible after injuring your knee can help reduce pain and swelling. Your doctor may suggest using crutches to keep weight off your knee or a knee brace to protect the joint from instability for a couple of weeks.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
The timeline for ACL sprain recovery can vary depending on the severity of the injury and individual factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to rehabilitation protocols. In general, it takes around 6 to 9 months to fully recover from an ACL sprain.
How quickly you can return to work after having knee surgery will depend on what your job involves. If you work in an office, you may be able to return to work after 2 to 3 weeks. If you do any form of manual labour, it could be up to 3 months before you can return to work, depending on your work activities.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
Mr Witte explains that even with a torn ACL, you may find a few weeks after your injury that you can ride a bike and swim, go back to work, and do most normal things. Including driving. But you will have problems with twisting and turning. Especially if youre doing it quickly while running or playing sport.
And, while strong, this tissue can overstretch or tear fairly easily. Unlike other tissue in the body, the ACL ligament doesnt have a blood supply. That means the ACL cant heal on its own when damaged. As a result, some ACL injuries require surgery to provide the best recovery outcomes.
