No, they are essentially the same file type; the only difference is that one acronym (TIF) is short for the other acronym (TIFF). So regardless of which acronym you use, both refer to the same image format. The two acronyms are used interchangeably, so theres no need to worry about which one youre using.
Choose Window Image Trace or switch to the Tracing workspace to open the Image Trace panel, and do one of the following: Choose one of the default presets by clicking the icons on top of the panel. For details, see Specify tracing options | Preset.
InDesign can crop an imported EPS, TIFF, or Photoshop graphic using the clipping path or alpha channel saved with the file.
Select the source image and open the Image Trace panel via Window Image Trace. Alternatively you can select a preset from the Control panel (by selecting from the small menu to the right of the Trace button) or the Properties panel (by clicking the Image trace button and then selecting from the menu).
Go to File Open and open your chosen image file in Illustrator. When your image appears in your Illustrator document, open the Image Trace window by going to Window Image Trace. All the tools youll need are in the Image Trace panel menu. Ensure your image is selected with the Image Trace window open.

In case the Image Trace command is not active, there might be a couple of reasons: The image needs to be selected: Select the image you want to trace by clicking on it with the selection tool. If that is not possible, check if the layer or the image itself is locked.
