A topic in DITA is the most granular entity of information. ing to the DITA specifications, a topic should be short enough to be easily readable, but long enough to make sense on its own. To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types.
Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
Most topic types contain some common elements, like a Title and Short Description. Some topic types contain unique elements that are specific to the purpose of that topic. Tasks, for instance, consist of a series of steps as well as elements to define prerequisites, context, and results.
DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table.
The DITA Task topic provides procedural information. This topic type answers How to questions. Tasks generally provide step-by-step instructions that enable a user to perform a specific task. Tasks also provide information on prerequisites, the expected result, and other aspects of a task.
A cell stores the frequency of a word in a document, with dark cells indicating high word frequencies. This procedure groups documents, which use similar words, as it groups words occurring in a similar set of documents. Such groups of words are then called topics.
There are two distinct types of DITA documents, topics and maps. In addition to the DITA topic and map types, Arbortext also supports the DITA Ditabase document type. DITA Ditabase documents are used to collect different types of DITA topics into a single document.
All topics have the same basic structure, regardless of topic type: title, description, prolog, and body. All DITA topics must have an ID, a title, and a body.
