In photography, toning is a method of altering the color of black-and-white photographs.
Tone refers to the relative brightness or colour of objects in an image. Generally, tone is the fundamental element for distinguishing between different targets or features. Variations in tone also allows the elements of shape, texture, and pattern of objects to be distinguished.
Tone or tonal range has a range of definitions in photography but the use here is to describe the differences between the very darkest part of a photograph and the lightest part of a photograph. Dark tones are the shadowed areas on a photograph. Light tones are the bright or highlighted areas on a photograph.
The Lightroom Tone Curve is a graph-based tool that lets you adjust the tones and colors of precise portions of an image. Most photographers use it to add extra contrast, though you can always do the opposite and create an interesting low-contrast effect.
To adjust the white balance quickly, select the White Balance tool and then click an area in the image that you want to be a neutral gray. The Temperature and Tint properties adjust to make the selected color exactly neutral (if possible).
A tone is produced either by mixing a color with gray, or by both tinting and shading. Mixing a color with any neutral color (including black, gray, and white) reduces the chroma, or colorfulness, while the hue (the relative mixture of red, green, blue, etc., depending on the colorspace) remains unchanged.
1. TONE. Tone refers to the levels of brightness in the photograph, from solid black to pure white. Shadows are dark tones; highlights are bright tones. The majority of nature photographs display a wide range of tones, from black or near black to white or near white.
