Hi Guys. Welcome to another episode of Learn Technology in 5 Minutes from MAKERDEMY and I am Venkatesh, the founder of MAKERDEMY. In this video, we will learn about NB-IoT, the wireless cellular communication technology for IoT. In an earlier video in this series, we learned about LoRa , the Low Power Wide Area Network radio technology designed for the Internet of Things. LoRa operates in the unlicensed spectrum. Is it possible to build a LPWAN for IoT, in the licensed spectrum? Yes, of course. Enter NB-IoT. NB-IoT or Narrow Band IoT is a standards based LPWAN that can be rolled out on top of the existing cellular network infrastructure. Cellular networks today allow us to transfer large volume of data at high speeds with low latency over very large distances. The trade off is that cellular devices consume a lot of power and are relatively expensive. A lot of IoT use cases have a different set of requirements altogether. Some of these requirements are operating cheap battery powered de

IoT: IoT devices can vary widely in terms of data requirements and can support a wide range of data rates, from very low data rates (e.g., sensor data) to high data rates (e.g., video streaming). NB-IoT: NB-IoT is designed for applications with very low data requirements.
TCP and LWM2M and CoAP over UDP. For all applications and devices deployed over NB- IoT, CoAP/LWM2M is recommended. Both HTTP and MQTT require TCP/IP as the underlying transport and are not suitable for NB-IoT NIDD communication channels.
NB-Fi Protocol employs a Narrow Band technology that enables communication using the Industrial, Scientific and Medical ISM radio band (and in other parts of sub-GHz license-free spectrum as well).
The main difference between this and the older version is improved downlink and uplink data rates. Its important to note that Cat-NB2 devices provide better mobility. They also support reconnecting when the device is in the connected mode, as opposed to idle mode only in NB1.
NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technology developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT docHubly improves the power consumption of user devices, system capacity and spectrum efficiency, especially in deep coverage.
