Capitalizing job titles Lets take a closer look at our style for job titles. Generally, a formal job title is capitalized when it precedes a name, but is lowercase when it follows a name. The speaker for the event will be Provost John McGreevy. The speaker for the event will be John McGreevy, provost.
Here are eight rules for writing a job title: Keep the focus on what the job entails. Avoid abbreviations and industry jargon. Include common job keywords. Include the level of seniority required. Be wary about informal wording. Leave out unnecessary information. Choose the right length.
Via being a preposition, should not be capitalized unless its the first or last word in the title.
A persons formal title should be used on first reference. Use lower case for titles unless they are directly before a name and function as part of the name. As a general rule, titles containing more than four words should be placed after the name.
Thats your quick and dirty tip: capitalize job titles when they come before a name and are an official title, and lowercase job titles when they come after a name or are merely descriptive.
A working title describes the nature of work performed by the position and is beneficial in differentiating between similar roles by clarifying the function of the position. A positions working title differs from the state-defined role title.
