The primary difference between these tax identification numbers and Employer Identification numbers is that a TIN is used to identify people who can be taxed within the United States, while the EIN is used to identify companies. Therefore, the difference is in the way the EIN and tax ID numbers can be used.
Section I TIN Description U.S. taxpayer identification numbers include a Social Security Number (SSN), which is issued to individuals, and an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is issued to individuals or entities.
TIN is an umbrella term for a group of identification numbers the IRS uses to administer tax laws. Federal ID Numbers are a type of TIN. The IRS recognizes a wide variety of TINs, including Social Security Numbers.
If youre a sole proprietor, you dont have to get an EIN if you have no employees and started your own business, instead of buying an existing business. So long as you dont switch to another business form such as a limited liability company or corporation, you can use your Social Security number for tax purposes.
When calling on your business account, use your Tax Identification number (TIN) in place of your Social Security number (SSN) as verification. The only exception is if youre a sole proprietor. In this case, please use your SSN instead.
ITINs do not authorize a person to work in the U.S. or provide eligibility for Social Security benefits. Tax returns filed with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number reporting wages paid are required to show the Social Security Number under which the wages were earned.
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax laws. It is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the IRS.
The ITIN cannot be used in place of an SSN (if eligible for the latter) for tax and wage reporting. How do I apply for an ITIN? Submit a completed IRS Form W-7 Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, along with documentation to substantiate your foreign status and true identity, to the IRS.
