We learned that implied or visual texture is when something looks bumpy or smooth or rough, even when its a flat piece of paper. We made different implied textures by making different kinds of marks with charcoal. We used adjectives (describing words) to describe the way each implied texture looked.

Papers come not only in different colors, but different surface textures. The surface texture of a drawing paper depends on how its made and what its made for. The roughness or smoothness of paper is called its tooth. The rougher the paper, the more tooth it has.
Paper texture refers to the surface pattern or feel of the paper, such as smooth, rough, embossed, or textured. Paper finish refers to the treatment or coating applied to the paper, such as glossy, matte, satin, or metallic.
Three surfaces are made for western papers: Rough (also called Torchon or Grossa depending upon where the paper is made and the language!), Not or Cold Pressed (Fina, Fin) and Hot Pressed (HP. Satinata, Liscia).
You can either use scissors or a craft knife or you can tear your paper into different shapes. Tearing the paper will allow you to create rough, organic and textured edges.
A deckle edge is the name given to the irregular hand-torn appearance on the edge of a paper. Closeup of the deckle edge detail on the corner of white and black portrait folders.
Paper finishes are also known as paper textures, and these terms both describe how a piece of paper feels in your hands. Is the paper smooth and slick to the touch? Is it rough and textured? Every paper texture is different, and every finish of paper has a different ideal use.
