Tags -- The tags (3-digit numbers) are followed by the names of the fields they represent. In this summary, and in the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data , if a tag can appear more than once in one bibliographic record, it is labeled repeatable (R). If it can only be used once, it is labeled non-repeatable (NR).
700 Added Entry--Personal Name (R) A personal name used as an access point. An access point is assigned ing to various cataloging guidelines to give access to the bibliographic record from personal names that may not be more appropriately assigned as fields 100, 600, or 800.
Field 600 may be used by any institution assigning subject headings based on the lists and authority files identified in the second indicator position or in subfield $2 (Source of heading or term). The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.
A MARC record consists of three main components: the Leader, the Directory, and the Variable Fields.
001 Control Number. Field 001 contains the control number assigned by the organization creating, using, or distributing the record. In OCLC records, field 001 is system-generated for each record on that system.
The 380 field is used in authority records for LCGFT indicating the class, form, genre, and/or other characteristics of the work being described. General instructions: Prefer a controlled vocabulary, such as LCGFT (Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms), LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), etc.
Indicators -- The use of indicators is explained in fields where they are used. Indicators are one-digit numbers. Beginning with the 010 field, in every field -- following the tag -- are two character positions, one for Indicator 1 and one for Indicator 2. The indicators are not actually defined in all fields, however.
