A symbol is anything that hints at something else, usually something abstract, such as an idea or belief. A literary symbol is an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings. A general symbol is universal in its meaning.
Go to Insert Symbol. Pick a symbol, or choose More Symbols. Scroll up or down to find the symbol you want to insert. Different font sets often have different symbols in them and the most commonly used symbols are in the Segoe UI Symbol font set.
In literature, symbols are often characters, settings, images, or other motifs that stand in for bigger ideas. Authors often use symbols (or symbolism) to give their work with more meaning and to make a story be about more than the events it describes.
Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, ideas, or visual images and are used to convey other ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon is a common symbol for STOP; on maps, blue lines often represent rivers; and a red rose often symbolizes love and compassion.
