Stain can be applied with a bristle brush, a foam brush, or a cloth. On woods with large, open pores, such as oak, mahogany and ash, increase your pressure to work the stain into the pores. Rubbing or brushing against the direction of the grain will help fill deep pores with stain.
Apply stain by brushing or wiping it in the direction of the grain, using smooth, even strokes. Wipe off any excess. Follow the pattern, left to right, top to bottom. The best way to stain lapped siding is from left to right, and from top to bottom.
A stain is a colorant applied to wood to change its color. Unlike paint, stains are designed to soak pigment into wood fibers with a solvent and then as it sets or cures, the color binds to the wood. There are different types of wood stains used for interior applications.
Brushing allows for more control and precision, while rolling is faster for larger surface areas.
Leave the original stain in place if you want to stain the piece a darker color. If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product.
Stains primarily form when a substance is spilled onto a surface and the molecules are trapped inside the fibers and pores of the material. The spilled substance coats the underlying material and the newly formed stain reflects back light of its own color, which is how the stain becomes visible to the naked eye.
