There are three types social security numbers. Unrestricted card. An unrestricted card is given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents (those with green cards). Restricted card. Non-work card.
The DHS issues endorsements for work authorizations to foreign passport-carrying nationals who obtain US citizenship and to those who temporarily relocate to the US and plan to work while theyre here.
The first three numbers represent the zip code of the Social Security office that issued it; most likely, it is where you were born and the nearest office in that zip code. Like zip codes, these numbers increase from east to west across the U.S. So, depending on where you were born, one can get deterministic value.
If you currently reside in the United States and plan to apply for work authorization or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) Status from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), you will also need a Social Security Number (SSN).
A Social Security card will be issued with a restriction to aliens authorized to work because: A work-authorized non-citizens eligibility can expire. Social Security cards do not have an expiration date.
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
People with Lawful Permanent Resident status. The 2nd type of card shows your name and number and notes, VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION. We issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who have Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authorization to work.
To be eligible for Zip, youll need to be at least 18 years old, live in the U.S. and have a valid phone number, mailing address and payment method. Some applicants may be asked to provide the last four digits of their Social Security number.
