Starting in December 2023, students from the Freely Associated States and contributors who do not have a Social Security number can create an account. If you currently reside in the United States and plan to apply for work authorization or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) Status from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), you will also need a Social Security Number (SSN). Your SSN allows employers to report your earnings to the United States government.
SSN Traces allow employers or consumer reporting agencies (CRAs), like GoodHire, to cross-reference a candidates submitted information with available database information associated with the SSN prior to running more comprehensive searches, such as criminal record checks or credit reports.
Social security numbers. Employers may truncate the employees SSN on employee copies of Forms W-2.
We dont require you to have an SSN before you start work. However, the Internal Revenue Service requires employers to use your SSN to report your wages. While you wait for your SSN, your employer can use a letter from us stating you applied for a number.
Documents you can use include: U.S. DD214 with full SSN. NGB 22 with full SSN. W-2 Form with full SSN (including W-2C, W-2G, etc.) SSA-1099 Form with full SSN (including SSA-1099-SM, SSA-1099-R-OP1, etc.) Non-SSA 1099 Form with full SSN (including 1099-DIV, 1099-MISC, etc.) 1098 Form with full SSN (including 1098-C, etc.)
Tax documents, bank loans and statements, birth certificates, military records, government forms and medical insurance forms will have your Social Security number on them. You can find your Social Security number on documents by contacting your parents and ex-employers or by applying for a new card.
Although the Social Security Number (SSN) is required when applying for or renewing a passport, it is used as proof of identity and U.S. citizenship, and it wont appear on your passport. If your SSN appears on your passport, it is an error and you should contact the Department of State to have the mistake corrected.
