Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT)
In a multi shaft engine (3 shaft) the Interstage Turbine Temperature reading provides information about the intermediate shaft temperature and therefore power delivery. The LP turbine drives the Fan, the intermediate turbine drives the intermediate compressor and the high pressure turbine drives the HP compressor.
ITT = Interstage Turbine Temperature. A position somewhere between TIT and EGT. EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
ITT is affected by the heat dissipating effect of airflow: The less air flowing through the turbine section the hotter it can get.
Interstage Turbine Temperature (ITT) is the temperature of the exhaust gases between the high pressure and the low pressure turbines. The gas temperature is measured by a number of thermocouples mounted in the exhaust stream and is presented on a flight deck gauge in either degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celcius.
AFR gauges are somewhat of a big picture of the average AFR of the cylinder bank while cylinder-mounted EGT gauges paint a more granular picture. The first widespread commercial application for EGT gauges came in the 1960s, when Alcor introduced the original analog gauge for piston-powered light aircraft.
