Installed at customers premises, smart metering systems provide automated meter readings and send consumption data back to the utility company at regular intervals. The AMI head-end system serves as a hub for incoming data from all installed smart meters.
AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure. This refers to systems that measure, collect and analyze energy usage, and interact with advanced devices such as electric meters through various communication media either on-demand or on a. pre-defined schedule.
The three most common network types for AMI are Cellular, Mesh, and Point-to-MultiPoint.
The disadvantage of the AMI system is that the implementation cost is a little bit high. Both software and hardware components are expensive. The overall complex system is tedious to implement. To date, there is no well-defined standardization method for deploying AMI which is the biggest disadvantage.

The AMI head-end system serves as a hub for incoming data from all installed smart meters. The head-end system verifies the data, performs preliminary processing and then forwards it to the meter data management system (MDMS). The MDMS is where the data comes to life.
In addition, AMI systems are able to monitor power outages in real time, allowing utilities to respond faster and more efficiently to address any issues that arise. The implementation of a smart meter AMI system would provide a great benefit to the power grid by allowing for better monitoring and improved efficiency.
