Coconut Oil: If youre looking for a completely plant-based option, you can use only olive oil as the wood sealant. While it wont create a solid paste like with beeswax, a combination of olive oil and coconut oil can still provide some protection and conditioning to the wood.
Olive oil used to be the traditional and ancient method of protecting worktops and treating wood surfaces, but it was found to have several drawbacks; the surface would always remain wet, did not protect against moisture for long, and helps bacterial growth. Hardly the best oil for use around food!
Butcher Block Oil is a food contact safe oil to seal and protect your wooden food preparation items such as butcher block countertops and wood cutting boards. In addition to protecting your kitchen surfaces, it also creates a beautiful flat finish while bringing out the natural colors of the wood.
Three of the most common sealers are polyurethane, polycrylic, and wax finishes. Key Takeaway: Sealing natural wood isnt just a finishing touch; its a crucial step in preserving beauty and longevity. From protecting against wear and tear to changes in humidity, proper sealing is essential for any DIY project.
Whilst there are many old school wood oils, the most commonly used are without a doubt Danish oil, Teak oil, Tung oil and to a lesser degree Linseed oil. There is no set formula for Teak or Danish oil meaning that they can vary from brand to brand.
Most stains should be sealed to prevent bleeding. After smoothing the stained wood, apply a sealer coat of thinned shellac, sanding sealer, or other appropriate sealer. Do not use shellac with NGR or water-base stains. If you plan to finish the piece with polyurethane, make sure the sealer is compatible.
How to seal wood without darkening the natural color: Sand with a very high grit - the higher the better! Clean with Krud Kutter. Water down white paint and lightly whitewash the wood. Use a sponge brush to eliminate brush strokes, and apply the General Finishes Flat Out Flat topcoat.
Not only is Pure Tung Oil natural, food-safe, water-proof, and easy to apply, but it helps bring out the natural beauty of the wood. We plan to try more green sealing products in the future, but for now, Tung Oil is our favorite natural wood sealer.
