Using the CHOOSE and RANDBETWEEN formulas together, you can select an item from a list based on the randomly assigned number to each selected item.
How to generate a random sample using Excel Add a new column within the spreadsheet and name it Randomnumber. In the first cell underneath your heading row, type = RAND() Press Enter, and a random number will appear in the cell. Copy and paste the first cell into the other cells in this column.
To create a simple random sample, there are six steps: (a) defining the population; (b) choosing your sample size; (c) listing the population; (d) assigning numbers to the units; (e) finding random numbers; and (f) selecting your sample.
Choose Randomize Range: Click on Data, then choose Randomize range. Google Sheets randomly rearranges the rows in the range. Use the Top x Rows: Now select as many rows as you want from the top of the range. Copy and paste these rows to use them as your random sample.
If you want to use RAND to generate a random number but dont want the numbers to change every time the cell is calculated, you can enter =RAND() in the formula bar, and then press F9 to change the formula to a random number. The formula will calculate and leave you with just a value.
The rand() function is the key tool needed to take a random sample. If you enter the function =rand() in a cell, Excel is equally likely to return any number between 0 and 1. For example, there is a 10% chance you will see a number between 0 and 0.1 and a 20% chance you will see a number between 0.8 and 1.
