Youve probably seen three letters floating around a lot in the world of trucking: DOT. In an industry rife with acronyms, this is the most important one to know, since all drivers will come across it quite a bit. Quite simply, DOT stands for Department of Transportation.
We hear the acronym DOT referenced often, especially when it comes to the handling and transportation of hazardous materials. Lets explore just what, and who, the DOT is. DOT stands for the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Companies in the transportation industry are subject to background screening requirements from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
The DOT, or Dictionary of Occupational Titles, a publication of the U.S. Employment Service (USES), has been used since 1939, thereby having decades of information and research on which it is based.
Work sample tests require applicants to perform tasks or work activities that mirror the tasks employees perform on the job. For instance, applicants for an Administrative Assistant position may be asked to transcribe an internal memo using a word processor or to accurately file a stack of paperwork.
These are train employees, dispatch employees and signal employees. These include locomotive engineers and conductors. The following categories are subject to testing: Operate a transit revenue service vehicle. Operate a non-revenue vehicle that requires a CDL.
49 CFR Part 40, or Part 40 as we call it, is a DOT-wide regulation that states how to conduct testing and how to return employees to safety-sensitive duties after they violate a DOT drug and alcohol regulation. Part 40 applies to all DOT-required testing, regardless of mode of transportation.
If you do not have a valid prescription as a medical explanation for a positive test, you will immediately be removed from DOT safety-sensitive job duties. Next steps for your employment will be determined by the company policy and does not necessarily mean your employment will be terminated.
