hi and welcome to the studio in this video youamp;#39;ll see the progression of a portrait painting step by step in six minutes first I start with the drawing this drawing is just pencil on newsprint and it is the exact same size as the painting itself 18 by 24 inches when itamp;#39;s finished Iamp;#39;ll transfer the drawing to the canvas one should be accurate but it doesnamp;#39;t need to be detailed Iamp;#39;m drawing it on paper first because I want to be able to focus on making the drawing accurate without making lots of charcoal marks on the canvas that just make it look messy so hereamp;#39;s the finished drawing once the drawing is completed Iamp;#39;ll transfer it to the canvas by covering the back in charcoal and tracing over it you want to be sure that the drawing on the canvas is in charcoal not graphite because graphite will eventually migrate through the oil paint to sit on the surface whereas charcoal will just be absorbed into the paint for this painting
