A first-then board is a strategy that you may use before a potentially challenging situation occurs with your child. This strategy can be used to clarify expectations by showing your child what first needs to be completed before gaining access to one of their preferred items/activities.
First, then is an individualized antecedent strategy. During first, then an adult delivers a clearly stated expectation (e.g., First, sit down), followed by a statement about the preferred item or activity the child will earn when they follow the expectation (e.g., Then, you get iPad).
Using a first-then board will provide the child with a visual means of introducing new tasks, activities, or events in a manner that the child understands and may be more motivated to complete. This tool assists with creating a structured and predictable environment for children.
How to use: Show the student the first/then card, point to the two symbols, and say First (Activity 1), then (Activity 2). When the first activity is done, show the student the first/then card again and say (Activity 1) finished! while pointing at the first visual on the card. Begin Activity 2 immediately.
During first, then an adult delivers a clearly stated expectation (e.g., First, sit down), followed by a statement about the preferred item or activity the child will earn when they follow the expectation (e.g., Then, you get iPad).
First/Then boards can be broken down into two-step activities. For example, FIRST clean up, THEN go outside. First/Then boards can be broken down into a sequence of steps followed by a reinforcer or the next transition.
This strategy displays two pictures. The first is usually a picture of a non-preferred activity and the then is a picture of a preferred activity. The child must do the first before being able to do the second activity. It helps with both receptive and expressive communication.
