How to take RAW photos on iPhone Open Settings, then scroll down and select Camera. (Image credit: Future) Tap Formats. (Image credit: Future) Under Photo Capture, tap the Apple ProRAW switch to toggle it on. (Image credit: Future) Open the Camera app and tap the RAW icon, top right.
With iOS 14.3 or later and an iPhone 12 Pro or later Pro models, your phone can capture images in ProRAW format using any of its cameras, including when also using the Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, or Night mode features.
For iPhone 11 and earlier, you have to use a third-party camera app to take classic RAW photos. Apple ProRAW is not available for these iPhone models. If you have an iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 non-pro model you can take only classic RAW photos using a third-party camera app.
Professional photographers and serious enthusiasts capture still images as raw files whenever possible. The reason is simple: raw files provide more image data and give photographers much greater control over white balance, saturation, sharpening and contrast in their images.
RAW is a format found on many DSLR, mirrorless and compact cameras you can even find the setting on some smartphones these days. Its essentially an uncompressed file format. Click the menu button on your camera. Click Image Quality. Click RAW. Click Set.
To take photos with ProRAW, go to Settings Camera Formats, then turn on Apple ProRAW under Photo Capture. To take a ProRAW photo, tap RAW in the Camera app, then take your shot.
RAW vs JPEG. Unlike a JPEG file, RAW format is uncompressed and isnt actually an image file, but is a collection of data from your cameras sensor that are saved on your camera. Software like Photos allows you to view the data as images and edit the RAW files.
RAW files have more data than JPEGs, so if your image ends up underexposed or overexposed, theres more room to correct things. If youre shooting in tricky lighting situationslike directly into the sun, before sunrise, or when theres a lot of contrast, shooting RAW can make it easier to make adjustments.
RAWs give you more information to work with, but you have to put more time into that work. If speed is of the essence or you want a point-and-shoot experience that yields photos ready to use out of the box, JPEGs might actually be a better option than RAWs.
Turn on ProRAW To take photos with ProRAW, go to Settings Camera Formats, then turn on Apple ProRAW under Photo Capture. To take a ProRAW photo, tap RAW in the Camera app, then take your shot.
