Text. Writing text in a LaTeX document is easy. Once you are inside the body of the document, as described in the Document Structure section of this page, all you have to do is start typing. When you compile the code LaTeX will take care of all the text formatting based on any commands and packages used.
Etymology (word origin): Donald Knuth created Tex (TEX), the three letters actually being uppercase Greek tau, epsilon and chi. This Greek tex is the root of English words like technical and technique. Later, Leslie Lamport built Latex on top of Tex, prepending the La presumably to reflect his name.
The word LaTeX is an abbreviation of Lamports TeX, named after Leslie Lamport. With LaTeX Lamport added a collection of macros to the original TeX program which was made by Donald Knuth.
Thus to produce a horizontal blank space of 20 mm in the middle of a paragraph one would type \hspace{20 mm} . This is the first paragraph of some text. It is separated from the second paragraph by a vertical skip of 10 millimetres.
1. : a milky usually white fluid that is produced by cells of various seed plants (as of the milkweed, spurge, and poppy families) and is the source of rubber, gutta-percha, chicle, and balata.
LaTeX is actually a typesetting system developed by Leslie Lamport, based on Donald Knuths TeX system. The La in LaTeX comes from Lamports name, and TeX is derived from Knuths TeX system.
LaTeX (/ˈlɑːtɛk/ LAH-tek or /ˈleɪtɛk/ LAY-tek, often stylized with vertically offset letters) is a software system for typesetting documents.
LaTeX and Plain TeX are two different customised typesetting environments, with their own commands and conventions, based on TeX. That is to say when you type LaTeX you are running TeX, but before it loads your LaTeX source it first loads the latex.
