If your Excel file truly is encrypted, double-clicking the Excel file will prompt you for a password before you can view the files contents. If this is the case (and you dont know the password), youll need a password cracker to view its contents.
Excel spreadsheets with password protection are not automatically encrypted because theyre two different security measures. Microsoft uses AES-256 encryption, which is currently one of the most advanced encryption systems and is almost impenetrable. When password-protecting your file, ensure you use strong passwords.
Open the workbook you want to protect. Click the File menu, and then click Passwords. In the File Passwords dialog box, select the Read-only recommended check box, and click OK.

On the Review tab, click Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook. Click Unprotect Sheet or Protect Workbook and enter the password. Clicking Unprotect Sheet automatically removes the password from the sheet. To add a new password, click Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook, type and confirm the new password, and then click OK.
How to Unlock Protected Excel Sheets Without a Password Change the Extension Type to a Zip File. In File Explorer, edit the file name. Open the Zip File. Open the Protected Sheet in Notepad.
