Like other forms of writing, paragraphs follow a standard three-part structure with a beginning, middle, and end. These parts are the topic sentence, development and support, and conclusion.
Manual indentation The Plain TeX (and LaTeX) commands \indent and \noindent are defined in ConTeXt, but are not hooked into the indentation mechanism. Now, if we want to indent after an itemize, starting the next paragraph with \indent does not work; to get indentation we have to say \indentation.
If you always want first-line indentation, modify the Normal style: Put the cursor anywhere in the paragraph. On the Home tab, right-click the Normal style, and choose Modify. Select Format, and then choose Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, under Indentation, select First line. Select OK. Select OK again.
Starting a new paragraph As noted above, one way to start a new paragraph is by inserting a blank line but the following code snippet shows an alternative solution which uses the \par command: This is text contained in the first paragraph. This is text contained in the first paragraph.
Tabbing commands \= (set tab) \ (advance to next tab stop) \ \+ (indent; move margin right) \- (unindent; move margin left) \ \` \\ (end of line; newline)
A paragraph in LaTeX is defined by leaving a blank line. If you just want to leave a line blank to make the text more readable in the source, then you just need to add a comment character, %, at the start.
Since the first paragraph follows a heading, sub-head, or break of some kind, there is no need to let the reader know it is the start of a paragraph. Its not a unanimous decision. The Chicago manual of Style indicates no indent is common, but a regular indent is allowed.
LaTeX will automatically indent the first line of each paragraph that doesnt immediately follow a section heading. If youd like to get rid of an indent, you can use the \noindent command: \section{Introduction} This is the first paragraph.
