You can have Excel automatically create the outline by using the Auto Outline command or create customized outlines using the Group command. This tool will take some practice, but you will find it extremely handy when you are working with a worksheet full of numbers and calculations.

Grouping and outlining is the process of creating a hierarchy within your worksheet. By grouping various cells together you can create levels of information that can be hidden or displayed as required. Outlining enables you to view a summary of the data or expand it to see the detail.
A good outline is: 1) overview of the problem, 2) your data and modeling approach, 3) the results of your data analysis (plots, numbers, etc), and 4) your substantive conclusions. 1) Overview. Describe the problem. What substantive question are you trying to address? This neednt be long, but it should be clear.
If you receive a pop-up box that says Cannot create an outline, your data doesnt have an outline-compatible formula in it. You may also have some blank cells in your data or missing column headers. Youll need to manually outline the data.
Outline the data automatically Select a cell in the range of cells you want to outline. Go to Data Outline Group Group, and then select Auto Outline.
Select a cell or a range of cells to which you want to add borders. On the Home tab, in the Font group, click the down arrow next to the Borders button, and you will see a list of the most popular border types. Click the border you want to apply, and it will be immediately added to the selected cells.
