THE CONVENTIONS OF OUTLINING Outlines should consist of three parts: the title, the purpose statement (focus or thesis), and the body of the outline.
For a standard research paper of 15-20 pages, your outline should be no more than four pages in length. It may be helpful as your are developing your outline to also jot down a tentative list of references.
The formal outline to be submitted with your paper must follow MLA formatting. The working outline does not need to be written in any specific format. It is for your own use, an informal rough draft of tentative information that you may use or discard later.
How do I write an outline? Identify your topic or thesis statement. Decide what points you would like to discuss during your paper. Put your points in logical, numerical order so that each point connects back to your main point. Write possible transitions between paragraphs.
To create an outline: Place your thesis statement at the beginning. List the major points that support your thesis. Label them in Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.). List supporting ideas or arguments for each major point. If applicable, continue to sub-divide each supporting idea until your outline is fully developed.
It provides a framework so that information is presented to the reader in a logical and orderly manner. It is called a working outline for two reasons; first, it is a sketch or initial plan for your paper and it is flexible and can change as you research and learn more about your topic.
