In any dark area that does not have permanent or temporary lights, where lights are not working, or where lights are not readily accessible, the employer shall provide portable or emergency lights and ensure that employees do not enter those areas without such lights.
Key principles in lighting A process control room should be lit at an illuminance of 300 lux, a corridor or walkway may only require 50 lux, whilst studying an engineering drawing may require 750 lux (see HSG38 Lighting at Work).
Regulation 8 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) regulations 1992 says that every workplace must have suitable and sufficient lighting. Where possible natural light should be used in preference to artificial lighting.
Requiredwindow(s) to provide natural light must have a light transmitting area of at least 10% of the floor area. Or, roof light(s) to provide natural light must have a light transmitting area of at least 3% of the floor area.
Inadequate lighting at work can lead to eye strain, fatigue, headaches, stress and accidents. The amount of light is not the only factor as badly designed lighting systems give rise to glare. This can cause stress and headaches, as well as creating accident risks.
Natural light isnt a mere luxury; its a necessity in the workspace. In fact, opting for an office space abundant in natural light is a strategic decision that can profoundly impact different aspects of your business. A workspace filled with natural light promotes employee satisfaction and well-being.
The rule of thumb is to have at least a ratio of 1:3:10 between the ceiling, background (walls) and task area. If the task area has 500 lx, the walls should have an average of 150 lx and the ceiling should have at least 50 lx. The minimum luminance value for walls is commonly 30 cd/m2.
Regulation no. 8 of the Workplace Regulations Act 1992 states that employers must ensure that: Every workplace has suitable sufficient lighting. This should be natural light, so far as is reasonably practicable.
