Add or remove legend items To add items, select a layer in the Contents pane and drag it to the legend group in the same pane. To remove legend items, expand the legend in the Contents pane to see the items. Reorder legend items by expanding the legend in the Contents pane to see the legend items.
To modify the legends appearance, complete the following steps: In the Contents pane, right-click the legend and click Properties. to open the Element pane. In the Element pane, select the tab containing the properties you want to change. Options tab. Adjust the properties as desired.

Legend placement Often legends are included in boxes to one side or bottom of the map. However, this doesnt have to be the case. Legends can just be placed in white space around your main map figure without a bounding box. Either way, the legend should be placed such that the map layout appears balanced.

Adjust the columns manually When the text has shrunk to the minimum font size, legend items that still dont fit are dropped from the legend. To set the number of columns in the legend, adjust the Columns value. Once the number of columns has been set, column headings appear in the Contents pane.
How to change the number of columns in your legend Double-click the legend to bring up the Legend Properties dialog box. Select the layer from Legend Items that you want to start a column. Check the Place in new column check box. Repeat this for each additional layer in which you want to start a column.
