thank you very much Mike and thank you all for giving me the opportunity to speak with you this evening um Iamp;#39;ve got probably about 40 or 45 minutes worth of material here after which weamp;#39;ll open it up for question and answer what I want to do this evening is to give you something of an overview uh of the German general staff and the ways in which itamp;#39;s uh it was not quite all that it has been cracked up to be now I think most of us have an image of the general staff hey it worked what know about that okay um a lot of people have heard about it sort of you know at a remove reading about German operations and that sort of thing and a lot of people have ideas in their minds about what the general staff was uh we to see it as an independent organization uh one that spoke truth to power so to speak that uh was trained to use initiative we see it as organized and centralized a functional bureaucracy with clearly defined spheres of authority of course we see it as expert
