Dot matrix printing, sometimes called impact matrix printing, is a computer printing process in which ink is applied to a surface using a relatively low-resolution dot matrix for layout.
Effects of Dot Gain on Print Quality Dot gain can lead to a decrease in contrast between light and dark areas, making the image appear flat and less vibrant. Dots spread out beyond intended, the fine details and the texture in the image gets lost and the final print looks fuzzy and less crisp.
By blending the halftone dots of the CMYK four colors, an infinite number of colors can be achieved. Currently, there are two main types of halftone dots used in printing processes: Amplitude Modulated (AM) dots and Frequency Modulated (FM) dots.
For example, a dot pattern that covers 30% of the image area on film, but covers 50% when printed, is said to show a total dot gain of 20%.
What is dot gain? Dot gain is a measure of the difference between the actual ink dot size of the printed piece and the ink dot size specified by the source file. It refers to ink dots appearing larger on the printed piece due to either a mechanical or optical effect. Dot gain is not good or bad.
1. Dot gain is the increase of halftone dot sizes as ink absorbs into the paper in the offset printing process due to type of ink, type of paper and even temperature and humidity.
Reduce Printing Pressure One of the most common causes of dot gain is too much pressure being applied to the substrate during the printing process. Flexographic printing is a pressure sensitive process and excess pressure (or too little) can adversely affect your final print quality.
