Add a standard or customized header or footer Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers, go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer that you want. When youre done, select Close Header and Footer or press Esc.
Add headers and footers in a page layout document Move the pointer over the top or bottom of a page until you see the header or footer area, then click any of the three fields (you can use any combination of the fields). Type your text, or click the Insert Page Number pop-up menu and choose a numbering style.
Tip: You can change the font and formatting of a heading style. Just select the heading text you want to customize, modify its styles the way you want, and then on the Home tab, in the Styles group, right-click the heading style that you customized and click Update Heading to Match Selection.
Verify that the navigation pane is set to show the appropriate level of headings. Click the drop-down arrow in the navigation pane, select Headings, and choose the desired heading levels to be displayed.
Go to Insert Header Footer. Add or header or footer text. Use the Options menu for additional customization. To exit, select Close Header and Footer or press Esc.
The simplest way to add headings is to use heading styles. Select the text you want to use as a heading. On the Home tab, click the heading style you want to use. If you dont see the style you want, click a left, right, or down arrow to see more available styles.

To add a heading style to text in Word, select the text, choose the Home tab in the ribbon, and in the Styles box, pick the heading style you want. When you save your document in another format for download, such as HTML or PDF, Word retains the headings styles, so everyone can still get the benefits of your headings.
