What is DITA? The Darwin Information Typing Architecture is an open-sourced, structured information architecture. It provides a neutral, modular content source for almost any type of content.
The Structured Application defines the structure and formatting rules that are enforced when creating your document. The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is an open XML standard for structured authoring. When authoring in DITA, you can also use the DITA Open Toolkit (DITA-OT) to publish output.

Its inheritance model makes it easy to specialize topics or elements within topics.
