hi im joe and im a phd student at oxford studying zoology um and all my research is on ecology and evolution so i work with natural populations instead of in the lab and this is just a short video to show you what life is like in the field and what its like to do field work so for my research i work with a community of birds mainly great and blue in these woods called white and woods which has about 1500 nest boxes scattered around the forest and during the spring we split up the woods and take our share of boxes as a research team which we monitor during the season when the birds are all breeding which is from about early april to late june so basically what we do is at each one of these boxes we track the breeding attempt thats happening at that box in terms of whats happening and the date that it happens and then we also individually mark every single parent and chick with these little metal rings which we put on their legs um each one having a unique kind of number lette
