Better Angels was directed by Guy Ferland and written by Evan Reilly and showrunner Glen Mazzara. The episode features the death of Shane Walsh, who was stabbed in the chest by Rick Grimes. Subsequently, Shane reanimates into a zombie and is later shot in the head by Carl Grimes.
How did Shane turn into a walker? Jenner (CDC doctor) told Rick that everyone was infected. Shane led out into the woods to kill Rick but Rick was smarter than Shane and he killed Shane instead. Since they were all infected, Shane turned, which proved Jenner to be right.
While returning to Hershels farm, Shane stares at a walker in an abandoned field. Kirkman stated the walker symbolizes the growing scope of the zombie virus. Were really just trying to show that that kind of thing is inescapable, he said.
The walker in the field is a direct resemblance of Shane. Shane will be forever lost and nothing can save him. He will continue to just wander around without a purpose
However, thats not the only way humans can be transformed into zombies, as the death of Shane confirmed the horrifying truth behind the undead. After Shane was killed going after Rick Grimes, he came reanimated as a walker, despite never being bitten - confirming that it wasnt necessary to be turned into a zombie.
Rick later returns to the grave site and finds out that Shane has reanimated; he shoots him in the head to finally put him to rest, but does not rebury him. Shanes reanimation confirms that it is not necessary for someone to be bitten to turn, something that was previously witnessed at the prison.
Shane - Season 2, Episode 12, Better Angels When Rick tells Shane hell have to kill an unarmed man to emerge victoriously, he actually uses the surprise advantage and stabs Shane. Surprising everyone, Shane then transforms into a zombie, leading everyone to believe that all that die will ultimately become walkers.
The Lone Walker is the harbinger of the threat of Walkers to come and the danger of Shanes continuing deterioration. It is the calm before the storm and the sky is starting to look awfully cloudy.
