The IRS provides Form 1040-ES for you to calculate and pay estimated taxes for the current year. While the 1040 relates to the previous year, the estimated tax form calculates taxes for the current year. You use Form 1040-ES to pay income tax, self-employment tax and any other tax you may be liable for.
You must make estimated tax payments and file Form 1040-ES if both of these apply: Your estimated tax due is $1,000 or more.

The rule is that you must pay your taxes as you go throughout the year through withholding or making estimated tax payments. If at filing time, you have not paid enough income taxes through withholding or quarterly estimated payments, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment.
The IRS may issue a penalty if you miss a quarterly tax payment deadline. The penalty is 0.5% of the amount unpaid for each month, or part of the month, that the tax isnt paid. The amount you owe and how long it takes to pay the penalty impacts your penalty amount.
If you miss the deadline for a quarterly tax payment, the IRS automatically charges you 0.5% of the amount that you didnt pay for each month that you dont pay, up to 25%. To find out how much you owe up to this point, you can use a tax penalty calculator.
