A work order must contain the authorized estimate for a specific job, the repairs requested by the customer, and the vehicles odometer.
It also serves to show the customer the methodology of the repair shop as well as the technicians thought process. Today, a well-written repair order should list a minimum of five items. The Complaint, Diagnostic Procedures, (inspections and tests performed), Test Results, Root Cause and the Recommended Correction.
A Repair Order is composed of several essential components that collectively provide a comprehensive overview of the repair process. These components include customer information, vehicle information, complaint or problem description, diagnostic findings, repair description, parts used, labor hours, and charges.
Write down precisely what you did to correct the problem. Include key test results, trouble codes, compression results, voltage/current/resistance readings, wiring or part numbers, and any other specific information about the parts you repaired or replaced. Remember, no one can read your mind.
Most car dealers and fixed operations managers are familiar with the three Cs of repair orders: condition, cause, and correction, which are necessary to complete an order correctly.
However, something that is NOT commonly found on a repair order is the tools used. The specific tools used for the repair are usually not detailed or listed on the order, as it is assumed that the technician will use the appropriate tools for the job.
Perform basic care and maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, and rotating tires. Repair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads, wheel bearings, and sensors. Perform repairs to manufacturer and customer specifications. Explain automotive problems and repairs to clients.
