How much do SMS texts cost? While SMS text messages are free for users with unlimited texting phone plans, mobile carriers do charge customers who dont have unlimited texting or who send SMS messages outside of covered areas. Most carriers charge the same rate for both SMS and MMS messages.
Sometimes you might get charged for a text message even though most texts are included free in your plan or you have plenty of allowance left. This is often because your phone has converted your text (SMS) to a picture message (MMS). Picture messages arent included in your plan.
What Are Carrier Fees? Carrier fees are small surcharges that mobile carriers (e.g. Bell, ATT, T-Mobile, etc.) apply to both incoming and sent messages. Carrier fees will differ based on the type of messages sent (i.e., SMS vs. MMS) and the phone number sending the message (i.e., a toll-free number or a short code).
Carrier FeesAdministrative Fee: The cost to recover expenses UScellular must pay to others in order to provide you with service. Expenses may include taxes and rent for cell site locations, utility expenses and costs paid to other telecommunication companies.
SMS are charged based on three things: where you are sending them to (to determine the per message cost), how long the message is and the content of the message. SMS messages are sent in segments which have a maximum length. The more segments your SMS contains, the more it costs to send.
SMS charges are generally on submission of a SMS by the CPaaS providers to telecom operators. The pricing is a combination of API charges by the CPaaS provider plus a DLT fee.
SMS and MMS carrier fees are additional costs charged by wireless carriers. These fees vary per message and number type. For example, some carriers only charge fees for messages sent on toll-free numbers. Others charge for both sent and received messages on short codes.
