Always use your personal email account when you apply for a job! Using a work email address creates a negative impression because it represents a misuse of your current employers time and resources.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) handles the delivery of emails. This protocol is responsible for transferring your email from your email client to an SMTP server. The server then uses SMTP protocol to authenticate your message and ferry your email to your recipients receiving mail server.
How does email work? As an end-user, all we know is that an individual composes a message, enters the recipients email address in the To field and then clicks the Send Mail button. The recipient can see that the email is received in their inbox.
The email client (web/ mobile/ desktop) connects to the Outgoing SMTP server based on the email account you used. The email client handovers the email in MIME format to the Outgoing SMTP server. The Outgoing SMTP validates the senders details and processes the message for sending.
The subject line of your email needs to state your reason for writing. A job description may specify what you should include. If not, craft a clear subject line that states your reason for writing and your name. For example, Application: Position Title, Your Name or Application for Position Title: Your name.
Avoid using your work email, and make sure your email address has a professional tone and appearance. Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo or any other free email providers are fine. Aim for an email address that includes combinations of your name or initials (for example, DavidBenjamin@mail.com or D.H.Benjamin@mail.com).
