Office work with light walking and regular sitting/standing can be resumed as early as two weeks. A job that requires lifting/running/or extended periods on your feet without rest will generally require six to twelve weeks of recovery before returning.
Weeks 6 to 24 of your recovery You should gradually be able to return to your normal level of activity between 6 weeks and 6 months after your knee operation. Youll be encouraged to continue with activities such as cycling and swimming but should avoid sports that involve a lot of twisting, jumping or turning.
Chronic ACL deficiency seems to have deleterious effects on the knee, with the development of chondral injuries and complex unrepairable meniscal tears. Such as bucket handle medial meniscus tears.
An ACL tear recovery time is generally eight to nine months, though some people may recover in six months. Photo: Getty Images. In the not-so-distant past, a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) commonly killed the careers of countless amateur and professional athletes.
Mr Witte explains that even with a torn ACL, you may find a few weeks after your injury that you can ride a bike and swim, go back to work, and do most normal things. Including driving. But you will have problems with twisting and turning. Especially if youre doing it quickly while running or playing sport.
It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport.
How soon you can go back to work depends on your job. If you sit at work, you may be able to go back in 1 to 2 weeks. But if you are on your feet at work, it may take 4 to 6 weeks. If you are very physically active in your job, it may take 4 to 6 months.
There is no universal agreement as to when it is safe to travel by plane after an ACL reconstruction. It seems that most Orthopaedic Surgeons advise their patients not to fly for 4 to 6 weeks following the ACL reconstruction. Short flights do not seem to be a problem.
