hello my name is jeff schalleberger and im going to talk to you a little bit about a technique called x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or xps uh we offer this here in the materials characterization lab at penn state uh you may have also heard the term esca used thats exactly the same technique it stands for electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis xps is by far the more commonly used terms thats what ill use throughout my presentation here xps is based on the photoelectric effect the photoelectric effect is we shine light onto a solid sample and we uh that light in our case in the form of low energy x-rays ejects electrons that were originally bound to the atoms in the material and we knock those electrons off into the vacuum and ultimately measure these with a spectrometer the equation that describes the photoelectric effect is shown here very simple equation this is actually what albert einstein won his nobel prize for in 1921 for some work he did explaining this effect in 19

XPS is a powerful measurement technique because it not only shows what elements are present, but also what other elements they are bonded to. The technique can be used in line profiling of the elemental composition across the surface, or in depth profiling when paired with ion-beam etching.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is used to determine quantitative atomic composition and chemistry. It is a surface analysis technique with a sampling volume that extends from the surface to a depth of approximately 5070 .
UPS Calculations The work function was calculated by subtracting the He I radiation energy of 21.2 eV from the high-binding- energy cutoff at 17.5 eV (Fig. S2a): 17.5 ( 0.1) eV 21.2 eV = 3.7 0.1 eV versus vacuum.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
This technique is used for chemical analysis. XPS is a versatile surface analytical technique with wide-ranging applicability. The sample to be analyzed can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas.
Compared with the conventional XPS characterization, the synchrotron-based XPS technique presents several advantages, such as adjustable detection depth, stronger detection signal, and higher resolution [34, 35].
Currently, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy is used in solid state and condensed matter physics to measure the electron density of states for organic and inorganic materials. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used in condensed matter physics to measure the electron energies of crystalline solids.
​XPS Sample Preparation: Press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Dissolve the powder in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of sticky carbon conductive tape or pressed into a tablet for analysis.
