1. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. This first saying of Jesus on the cross is traditionally called The Word of Forgiveness.
The first word of Jesus from the cross was almost certainly: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. St. Luke alone records it (23:34).
If you ask them what the work of the Cross is, they would respond by saying that the work of the Cross is the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus for the sins of the world.
Humanity at large has failed to come to know God through human wisdom. The language Paul uses suggests that God, in His wisdom, did not allow human wisdom to bring them to Him. Instead, it pleased Him to save those who believe through the folly of what Paul and the other apostles pdocHub.
The apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:17 that he does not pdocHub with eloquent wisdom so that the cross of Christ would not be emptied of its power. Now this does not mean that Paul does not try to speak well or be engaging. Nor does this mean that Paul uses no wisdom as he proclaims the gospel message.
Jesus answered this question for us in His second saying from the cross. Its recorded in Luke 23:43, Verily, I say unto thee, Today you will be with Me in paradise.
All: Because by Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world. REFLECTION: When he could not reason with the Crucify him, crucify him, chants of the frenzied crowd, Pilate condemned Jesus to death.
Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. The First Word (Forgiveness) When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.
