DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is a set of XML markup languages for authoring and publishing technical documentation. Designed to be flexible, modular, and re-usable, along the structured content model, it allows the creation and management of complex information sets, referred to as topics.
Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
The task topic includes sections for describing the context, prerequisites, actual steps, expected results, troubleshooting, example, and expected next steps for a task. Task elements - DITA DITA langref containers task-elements DITA langref containers task-elements
DITA map and topic documents are XML files. As with HTML, any images, video files, or other files that must appear in the output are inserted via reference. Any XML editor or even text editor can be used to write DITA content, depending on the level of support required while authoring. DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table. Information Types DITA provides three base topic types (concept, task, and reference), a number of extended topic types, and the capability to create new topic types through specialization.
DITA includes markup that processors can use to generate reader navigation to or across DITA topics. Such navigation behaviors include table of contents (TOCs) and indexes. Processors can generate a table of contents (TOC) based on the hierarchy of the elements in a DITA map.
