There are three basic types of profit sharing plans: traditional, age-weighted and new comparability.
If you leave your job, you cannot take the profit-sharing money with you. However, you may be able to roll over the money into an IRA or another retirement plan.
Employers follow a set formula for contributions. Theres no required profit-sharing percentage, but experts recommend staying between 2.5% and 7.5%.
For terminated defined contribution plans (for example, 401(k), 403(b) or profit-sharing), participants generally receive the full amount of their vested account balance upon plan termination.
A profit-sharing plan is a type of incentive plan where businesses give indirect or direct payments to employees. Employers pool profits into a contribution fund, which they distribute to all employees based on a pre-determined formula, giving employees an explicit stake in a companys profits.
If you, the employer, make contributions to a profit sharing plan, you can deduct up to 25 percent of the compensation paid during the taxable year to all participants. Your contributions to the plan can either be fully vested (nonforfeitable) when made, or they can vest over time ing to a vesting schedule.
With a profit-sharing plan (PSP), employees receive an amount based on the companys earnings over a specific period of time (e.g., a year). Generally, an employee receives a percentage or dollar amount of the businesss profits either in cash or company stock.
