SBF then created his own crypto exchange, FTX, in 2019 based on the success of Alameda. The exchange grew fast with high-profile acquisitions, a hefty marketing budget, and promises of high returns. Users were told that they could earn much higher yields with FTX than with other traditional banks.
He amassed a fortune taking advantage of the price differences in bitcoin in Asia and the United States after departing Jane Street in 2017. He eventually started crypto trading firm Alameda Research in 2017 and founded FTX a year later. It was valued in January at $32 billion.
Users can trade spot, margin and crypto derivatives like options and futures. FTX.US also offers a non-fungible (NFT) platform — users can mint, buy and sell NFTs on Ethereum and Solana. Other FTX.US products include: FTX Card, FTX Pay, OTC trading, FTX Derivatives and Whitelabel.
The 30-year-old was picked up by the Royal Bahamas Police Force after the local government received a formal notice from the U.S. that it had filed charges against him and likely would seek his extradition. News of the arrest comes about a month after SBF's crypto exchange declared bankruptcy and he resigned as CEO.
FTX filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 11, 2022, after a surge of customer withdrawals earlier in the month. Then-CEO Bankman-Fried admitted that the company did not have sufficient assets in reserve to meet customer demand.
A lawyer for Mr Wang said his client had accepted responsibility for his actions and took seriously his obligations as a co-operating witness. "Samuel Bankman-Fried is now in FBI custody and is on his way back to the United States," Mr Williams said.
