CHF results from any disorder that impairs ventricular filling or ejection of blood to the systemic circulation. Patients usually present with fatigue and dyspnea, reduced exercise tolerance, and systemic or pulmonary congestion.
The most common cause of congestive heart failure is coronary artery disease. Risk factors for coronary artery disease include: high levels of cholesterol and/or triglyceride in the blood.
Social workers can help those with heart failure learn about their illness, understand the importance of treatment adherence, manage social factors of illness, and address potential psychological issues (Claiborne Vandenburgh, 2001, 2003).
