Osteopathy, unlike osteopathic medicine, which is a branch of the medical profession in the United States, is a pseudoscientific system of alternative medicine that emphasizes physical manipulation of the bodys muscle tissue and bones.
In rare cases, serious complications have been linked to therapies involving spinal manipulation, including osteopathy. These include the tearing of an artery wall leading to a stroke, which can result in permanent disability or even death. These events usually occurred after spinal manipulation involving the neck.
OMM, also called Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), is a form of manipulation that: Is the generic term used to refer to many different manipulation techniques. Can be used to treat structural and functional issues in the bones, joints, tissues and muscles of the body.
Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of: increasing the mobility of joints. relieving muscle tension. reducing pain.
Physicians who hold an active AOA primary board certification are now eligible to earn a Designation of OMT, signifying their skills and expertise in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and osteopathic principles and practice (OPP).
Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a comprehensive approach to health care in which osteopathic physicians apply osteopathic philosophy, structural diagnosis and use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the diagnosis and management of patients.
OMT is a safe treatment for most people, and side effects are rare. Some people may experience stiffness or soreness after their treatment, but this should go away on its own in just a few days.
Low back pain, especially when it lasts for six weeks or more, is notoriously difficult to treat. In a recent study, OMT was shown to reduce pain and improve function for patients with nonspecific, chronic low back pain. The same study found that the worse the pain and disability, the greater the benefit from OMT.
