Physicians who hold an active AOA primary board certification are now eligible to earn a Designation of OMT, signifying their skills and expertise in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and osteopathic principles and practice (OPP).
A doctor of osteopathy (DO) is qualified to perform OMT. These specialists have studied osteopathic techniques and undergone special training in the bodys musculoskeletal system and the interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. A DO is also sometimes known as an osteopathic physician.
Residents entering at the ONMM1 level will complete their training after 36-months. Residents entering at the ONMM2 level will complete their training after 24-months. Residents entering at the ONMM3 level complete their training within 12 months.
In addition to basic OMT, MDs can take courses on function, myofascial release, cranial manipulation, muscle energy techniques, and other OMM topics.
Only DOs are trained and licensed to perform OMM.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a system of hands-on techniques used by osteopathic physicians (DOs) to diagnosis, treat, and prevent illness or injury and improve function. OMT techniques range from subtle touch to gentle pressure and stretching to precision thrust style maneuvers.
To obtain the Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) designation, you must hold an active primary AOA board certification from one of the following AOA specialty docHubing boards: American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology. American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology. American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine.
